Uncommon Patterns is the first full-feature cohesive generative Ordinal project that delves into Ordinal theory rarity. Through scalable vector graphics' turbulence filters, this simple yet output-diverse collection displays a chaotic approach to generative art. The project consists of 50 pieces, each ranked by sat age, all inscribed on uncommon sats.
Each piece takes as input the hash of the block of the uncommon sat it is inscribed on and solely uses it to generate its art. Witness the beauty within the chaos of a handwritten algorithm that generates breathtaking images through the magic of turbulence filters, shapes and strokes.
Uncommon Patterns art is generated via javascript which appends SVG elements and filters. Since the outputs are heavy and require a desktop computer for rendering, each token is rendered and inscribed as a JPG file with full forward-backward provenance for the entire collection within its EXIF metadata, including the renderer inscription which sits on its own uncommon sat.
This strategy enables holders to display their pieces on any device via JPG format, while also allowing them to extract the full piece in SVG format by calling the HTML file permanently stored on the Bitcoin blockchain from a desktop computer.
Uncommon Patterns was launched and displayed at the Bitcoin 2023 Conference in Miami from May 18th–20th. Tokens #1–49 were sold via Gamma's descending/dutch auction starting at 0.5 BTC and dropping to 0.05 BTC over 3 days. Token #50 was fractionalized into The Final Pattern, a separate collection of 2,025 pieces on block 78 sats.
Bitcoin has periodic events that naturally lend themselves to a system of rarity. Uncommon sats from the early years are much rarer than uncommon sats from later years — there is one uncommon per 50 BTC before the first halving, 1 per 25 BTC after, and so on. Today, there is 1 uncommon sat per 6.25 BTC mined.
